Kedarnath is one of the sacred places in Chardham Yatra which is situated in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal region in Uttarakhand. Kedarnath is considered to be one of the most remote sites of Chardham Yatra, but due to such a remote area, Kedarnath gets so much importance because of Lord Shiva Temple which is considered to be one of the twelve Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva.
Kedarnath Temple is situated in a magnificent Himalayan range which is considered to be the Kedarnath range by the people, at an altitude of 3,580m (11,755 ft.) above sea level. Due to breathtaking snow-capped peaks and ahead of river Mandakini. This beautiful ambiance around the temple brings a feeling of spirituality. This feeling of quiet peace in heaven causes so many Rishi/ Sadhu to come here for meditation. There are around 200 shrines that are dedicated to Lord Shiva in the area itself shows the importance of this place.
As per legends, there is an interesting Story behind the Town and its Temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers during the Mahabharatha War, killed their own cousins Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra war so to get rid themselves of this sin, the Pandavas undertook a pilgrimage to Kedarnath to please Lord Shiva. Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and the Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Just Behind the temple, you will see Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.
