“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong places, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where there’s nothing but the odor of old, moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the never-ending background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and roughly 600,000,000 square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. If you hear anything close roaming about, God help you since it most definitely has heard you.

A topic calling for photos that were “odd” or “wrong” in some way appeared in May 2019 on the paranormal discussion board of notorious website 4chan. One user uploaded a picture of a very wide open room with fluorescent lighting you’d expect to see in a dollar shop, awful yellow wallpaper, and the sort of carpet that was common in dentist offices in the early 1990s. It appeared slightly more ominous in the photograph because of the dutch angle. The vivid deion above was provided by a different user, and so the Backrooms were created.

The Backrooms are a recent arrival on the online landscape; they have only been around for about a year. They have, however, swept the creepypasta community. The infinite location has been the subject of several fiction, fan art, and video games. Though The Backrooms Game is perhaps the most well-rounded interactive experience currently on the market, the idea behind it is yet undeveloped. (For that joke, I apologize. We should proceed.)

Beginning with the instruction to “go as far as you can without going nuts,” backrooms game Free Edition provides all the counsel you’ll ever need. Remembering who you are and why you are there requires you to check your watch every thirty seconds. NOT TO BE LOOKED AT. Then, you’re abruptly dropped into the endless halls with the assignment of surviving long enough to discover the exit.

Simple controls are used: WASD to move about, E to interact, and TAB to display your watch. Though it is not required for a game like this, partial controller compatibility is provided. There isn’t much nervousness when it comes to reflexes; it’s just a walking simulator. The graphics and sound effects, which are slavishly true to the original deion posted on 4chan, provide the tension. Infuriatingly humming lights, endlessly repeating wallpaper, and seemingly interminable passageways are all there. This game would include the odor of the previous carpet’s moisture, if Smell-O-Vision existed.

There is no narrative; there is only one objective: to get away. You could be lost for an hour or discover the exit in just ten minutes thanks to the Backrooms’ random generation. Unbelievably, it is simple to avoid the ugly beast that must be avoided. It could go unnoticed if you pay close attention, take caution, and don’t race around turns without first looking ahead. In order to maintain your sanity, the game encourages you to check your watch every 30 seconds, but the more you travel, the more insane you get. Be prepared to encounter some changing patterns and dim lights.

The only incentive to play The Backrooms Game again right now is to beat your own records for speed or distance. Future improvements are planned, and they range from adding additional creatures and monster encounters to adding a thorough inventory system. Although you can opt to donate the very modest sum of $2.99 to support the development team’s goals, the game is completely free. Certainly, there is room for a more complex and varied game.

For the first five minutes, The Backrooms Game succeeds as an existential experiment in dread and young children’s fear. Both literature majors and gaming YouTubers will value the connection to Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the additional title it provides for gaining subscribers. The majority of us will either flee right away or slowly become bored. One journey is more than sufficient, at least till those further features are introduced, whichever way you look at it.
