Garpanchkot is an isolated, green, quiet, and serene valley at the heart of the reserve forest area in West Bengal, India – situated near the Panchet Dam on the border of Bardhaman district and Jharkhand. According to legend, DamodarSekhar established Panchkot Raj probably during the early 90 AD and expanded his kingdom over several other Parganas. To give recognition to the main five (panch) clans (hunt) of the locals the kingdom assumed the name Panchkot. The kingdom was probably a part of the old “Tilakampa Kingdom”. The ruins of Telkupi, the said capital of Tilakampa, submerged after the construction of Panchet Dam. Around 1600 AD, Garhpanchkot came under the rule of the famous king BirHambir of the BishnupurMalla Dynasty. The ruins of the Garh (Fort) of the Singh Deo Dynasty located at the southern foothills and a group of temples is still standing as mute spectators of the rise and fall of the dynasty.
