The outdoor play area is important to young children in our early childhood services and classrooms. Firstly, many of the developmental tasks that kids must perform in exploration, risk-taking, fine motor growth and the processing of large quantities of fundamental information may be most successfully achieved by physical play. Second, our society is moving physical play away from small children through heavy TV and tablet use, unhealthy communities, busy and exhausted parents, parental transparency, removing school recesses, and performance expectations that drive more and more developmentally unsuitable learners into our early childhood systems, thereby moving time away from the play.
